Grade 11 Art - Culminating Performance Task (CPT)
Your final Culminating Project in this class is an entirely independent art piece - you select the topic, medium, and approach! The file posted below will guide you in working out your idea for this project in your sketchbook. This part of the process will also be evaluated.

SKETCHBOOK: (Thinking - 20 marks)
In your sketchbook, you will be expected to complete a minimum of 4 pages of planning & preparation for this project. You should include as much as you can of the following...
- brainstorming / figuring out your idea
- rough sketches (coloured & non-coloured), considering possible compositions
- samples of possible media and techniques you may use
- record inspiration from other artist(s) who work in the same subject / media you are interested in
- later stage sketches that provide more detailed / concrete ideas of what your piece will look like

CREATE YOUR ARTWORK: (Knowledge - 20 marks / Application - 40 marks / Communication - 5 marks)
Exactly what you are creating and how are up to you, but you will need to be aware that you will need to demonstrate the following...
- appropriate and successful use of the medium you have chosen (e.g. paint, conte, print, etc.)
- appropriate use of compositional strategies (e.g. Burridge's Compositional Designs, Balance)
- proper use of colour theory (and/or value)
- appropriate application of previously learned concepts / skills
- quality and craftsmanship of your final product
- communicate your ideas / concept visually

How To Write Your Artist Statement:
FORMAT:
To accompany the sculpture you created you are to write an artist statement which should follow this format…
- one page minimum (maximum: two pages)
- typed (12 pt. font, max. 1” borders)
- double spaced
- CREDIT LINE (top left hand corner): include Artist, Title, Medium, Date
- Three paragraphs (content to be explained)
CONTENT:
Paragraph 1: Use this paragraph to introduce your art piece.
- State the title of your work - be sure to underline it!
- Explain the medium that you used (medium means what it is made from) and why it was appropriate for your piece.
- Introduce the general meaning of your work, like a topic sentence. What is your art piece about?
Paragraph 2: In this paragraph, explain key decisions you made.
- What is the focus (emphasis) of your piece?
- Explain the specific meaning / symbolism of your piece - you can break this down into multiple symbols if necessary.
- Talk about how the materials, subject matter, colour and composition of your piece and what it is meant to communicate to the viewer.
- What do you want it to mean?
Paragraph 3: Use this paragraph to conclude your artist statement.
- Reflect on how the making of this work has brought awareness to yourself as a artist.
- You can talk about what you enjoyed about this project or what you found frustrating - what does this tell you about yourself?
