This year, we will learn about 1 point, 2 point and 3 point perspective drawing.  These technical skills for rendering images in 3-dimensions is useful particularly for those building a portfolio for applying to post-secondary Art or Design programs.  All notes, practice, and exercises should be completed in your sketchbook (no loose sheets with be evaluated).  If you happen to miss a step in our practice, please use the checklist below to ensure you have the information you need for this unit of study...

1. PERSPECTIVE POWERPOINT NOTES
First, we took notes on the three types of linear perspective (1 pt, 2 pt, 3 pt) and the key words involved when talking about the techniques.  The powerpoint is posted above for you to download and review if needed.

2. PERSPECTIVE PRACTICE SKETCHES
Next, we did some practice sketches to get comfortable with stacking shapes, shapes with holes, patterns, and curves in perspective.  These practice sketches were based on the YouTube tutorials found at: http://www.studentartguide.com/articles/one-point-perspective-drawing. This is where you should go, if one of these days was missed in class.

3. PERSPECTIVE DRAWING EXERCISES (to be marked)
Finally, we are applying these skills with greater detail (again, in our sketchbooks) in the form of drawings exercises that will be evaluated.  Please see the instructions (below and to the right) to understand what is required.

4. PERSPECTIVE TEST (Knowledge: 20 marks)
For this unit, there will be a test to ensure clear understanding of concepts and their application.  Content and date will be announced in class.

EXERCISE #1: Draw a Room (Application: 5 marks)
Using 1 point perspective (use the template sheet provided), design your own room.  You must include the following items...
- at least 1 door
- at least 1 window
- at least 4 pieces of furniture
- hardwood OR tile flooring
- at least 3 decor items (e.g. light fixtures, curtains, pictures, candles, statues, etc.)

IMPORTANT:
1. Be sure to think about scale (each square = 1 square foot approx.) and be sure to draw all furniture & objects using perspective rules.
2. Please show all orthogonal lines lightly to show your work.  Shading and heavier outlines can be used to indicate the more "finished" parts of your drawing.
3. Colour is optional (not being marked).

HINT: You can look at things around your house or decor magazines (even the Ikea catalogue) to draw from.

EXERCISE #2: Renaissance Architecture (Application: 5 marks)
We are going to work on TWO different Renaissance street scenes - one in 1 point perspective and another using 2 point perspective.  I will mark only you BEST one when we are finished.  Try NOT to measure things, but look at proportions and follow all perspective rules you have learned.

IMPORTANT:
1. Keep all construction lines visible.
2. Do NOT add colour, but shading is optional.

EXERCISE #3: "Sci-Fi / Fantasy" Building (App: 10 marks)
Inspired by the drawings of M.C. Escher and the graphics in the game Monument Valley, you will create your own Science-Fiction OR Fantasy building based on the principles of 2 point perspective drawing.
1. Begin by stacking a series of cubes below, on, and above the horizon line using 2 point perspective.  Keep in mind that your structure is allowed to be closer to one vanishing point than the other if you wish.
2. Alter these stacked cubes into other shapes by cutting of edges, making things hollow, or creating curves.
3. Include either stairs or ladders to indicate access to more than one level.
4. For extra-impressive results, try to build in an illogical element by altering the way parts of your building overlap.  NOTE: Only attempt this if you are sure that you understand the concept fully, it is not mandatory for this assignment.
5. Erase your construction lines and colour using the media of your choice (e.g. pencil crayon, markers, watercolours).
