Drawing Techniques:

HOW TO DRAW REALISTICALLY: In order to learn how to draw realistically, you have to approach the task with an open frame of mind.  Many of us trust our brains too much to figure out how to draw things, but we need to draw using our eyes.  To practice how to learn how to see, use the powerpoint below and work through the exercises.

YOUR PENCIL SET: H pencils are harder and used for drawing and drafting.  B pencils are used for shading.  The higher the number the darker the pencil.

SHADING TECHNQUES: There are a variety of ways that you can shade a form.  Take a look at the examples below and you will see the basic differences between the following techniques (from left to right) - hatching, cross-hatching, smooth-shading, and pointillism.

HOW TO SHADE: Look at these examples of geometric forms (sphere, cube, cylinder, & cone).  Try to re-create the values that you see by using a variety of pencil types (2H-6B) and layering as you shade.  Remember NOT to press too hard.  NOTE: For each, the light source is from the top left.

Our final drawing task will be a portrait drawing that you can complete in your sketchbook or on a small poster sized paper.  Choose one of your black & white photos to re-create as a pencil drawing.  You will draw if using the grid method and shade using a variety of pencils.

To properly prepare for this drawing, it is helpful to know some basic proportions related to the human face.  Take a look at some of these diagrams and the following link to improve your drawing accuracy.
